This role is part of the Blue Origin Engines business unit, where our focus is the design, development, manufacturing, and testing of engines and propulsion systems. Built for multiple uses, our family of engines is powering the next generation of rockets for commercial, civil, national security, and human spaceflight.

As part of a hardworking, diverse team of Materials and Processes Engineers, you will be responsible for identifying materials and processes, specifically precision cleaning and surface finishes, to increase manufacturability of liquid rocket engine hardware. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Design and optimize cleaning methods for a variety of materials, including metals, plastics, and composites to meet precision cleanliness levels.

  • Evaluate and select appropriate cleaning materials, chemicals, and equipment to achieve desired surface finishes.

  • Collaborate with product design and manufacturing teams to integrate cleaning and surface finishing requirements into the production process.

  • Develop and implement site contamination control programs to prevent contamination from manufacturing processes and ensure hardware is delivered free of FODz

  • Conduct root cause analyses to identify potential sources of FOD/ contamination and drive corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

  • Conduct training and provide guidance to employees on contamination control best practices and protocols.

  • Work with external suppliers to ensure the cleanliness of piece parts and components.

  • Investigate and resolve any contamination incidents or non-conformances.

  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance contamination control processes and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field; Master's degree preferred

  • Strong knowledge of cleaning processes, cleanliness verification, surface finishing techniques, and process control principles

  • Understanding of contamination control principles and best practices

  • Familiarity with industry standards and regulations related to contamination control, such as ISO 14644

  • Experience with a variety of cleaning methods (e.g., ultrasonic, solvent, aqueous) and surface finishing techniques (e.g., plating, painting, coating)

  • Excellent problem-solving and root cause analysis skills

  • Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Proficiency in using contamination monitoring equipment and tools

  • Excellent attention to detail and task ownership, someone who demonstrates pride in all work and willingness to perform low-level tasks when needed.

  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and handle small and large projects with a diversity of internal and external customers.

  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and strengthen our culture of inclusion.

  • Understanding of aerospace manufacturing and quality management systems

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as a M&P engineer (or similar) in a manufacturing environment, preferably aerospace.

  • Proven experience in contamination control or cleanroom environments, preferably in the aerospace industry

  • Experience working with Ni-based Alloys, Cu-based Alloys, and/or other aerospace materials

  • Experience in a broad array of cleaning processes, cleanliness verification techniques, surface finishing techniques, and process control principles

  • Experience supporting design and manufacturing teams in an aerospace environment, including preparing specifications, test reports, and design substantiation documentation.

  • Ability to understand and interpret result from characterization techniques such as SEM/EDS, FTIR, etc

  • Experience evaluating nonconforming hardware within the context of quality management systems and providing technical rationale for use or scrap.
