Job Summary

James River Insurance is seeking an Underwriting Intern for the Summer of 2024. This will be a 9-week remote internship, generally early June to early August. Opportunities are available in our Excess Casualty underwriting division.

As a James River Insurance Intern, you will be given the opportunity to learn from some of the best commercial insurance professionals in the country within a small team setting. As part of the team, you will gain exposure to and experience with insurance processes through mentorship, projects, job shadowing, technical developmental trainings, and professional development sessions. Interns will have the opportunity to gain a broader view and understanding of Excess & Surplus insurance. This is a paid internship.

Our Interns learn to calculate premiums and determine proper terms for acceptable risks as well as review and analyze underwriting data to determine if risks meet corporate underwriting standards.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Continuously exhibit and uphold Core Values of Integrity, Accountability, Communication and Teamwork, Innovation and Customer Service
  • Increase knowledge of key insurance concepts through on-the-job training, assigned manuals, and self-study
  • Begin to learn how to review submissions, analyze and document key exposures, price accounts, and complete worksheets
  • Gain understanding of underwriting decisions to accept, modify, or reject risks
  • Assist in reviewing upcoming renewal applications and prior year files, to ensure risk still meets underwriting requirements
  • Assist in checking issued policies for accuracy
  • Help prepare files for quoting
  • Assist with assigned underwriting projects

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Aptitude for learning how to effectively assess risk
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment to complete assignments within the parameters of instructions given, prescribed processes and standard accepted underwriting practices

  • Solid customer service and relationship building skills
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Internet researching

Experience and Education

  • Enrollment in an accredited college or university majoring in Business, Accounting, Economics, Risk Management & Insurance, or related field.
  • Expected graduation date of December 2024 or Spring 2025 preferred
